How to Clean Porcelain Tile:
Like most flooring solutions, the best way to clean porcelain tile varies based on the texture and finish. It is always best to use the mildest cleaning solution available before bringing out the big chemicals. A simple solution of one cup white vinegar and one gallon of hot water should be sufficient to cut through grease and dirt. A mild, all purpose cleaner diluted to half strength with hot water is also effective.
To Clean Unpolished/Unglazed Porcelain Tile:
- Sweep and Vacuum area to pick up any loose dirt.
- Working in sections, saturate floor with mild cleaning solution. Allow it to soak into the tile for a few minutes but don’t allow it to dry on the floor.
- Scrub any stains with soft bristled brush.
- Rinse away dirty cleaning solution with clean, hot water.
- Dry the tile with a clean towel.
To Clean Polished/Glazed Porcelain Tile:
- Sweep and Vacuum area to pick up any loose dirt.
- Spray any stains with mild cleaning solution and soft bristled brush.
- Using a mop, hot water and mild cleaning solution mop the floor.
- Rinse mop, and using hot water and mop wash the floors again to remove the cleanser thoroughly.
- Dry with a towel or microfiber cloth. You can polish to a high shine using a cheesecloth or old, soft t-shirt.
To Clean Textured Porcelain Tile:
- Sweep the area to remove loose dirt, first in the direction of the tile and then on the diagonal. This will loosen any dirt in the crevices. Vacuum to remove dust and dirt.
- Saturate the tile completely with mild cleanser, allowing it to soak for several minutes.
- Scrub the floor with soft brush, working in two directions to penetrate the texture.
- Rinse the floor to remove dirty cleaning solution.
- Dry with a clean towel or microfiber cloth.
In order to keep your tile in great shape for years to come you should avoid the following:
- Products containing ammonia or bleach may be too harsh for your tile and can alter the color of the porcelain. It may also have an adverse affect on the grout around the tile.
- Oil based detergents or wax cleaners can leave a residue on your tile and should be avoided.
- On unglazed porcelain you should never use any cleaners with dyes as the color can be absorbed into the porcelain tile.
- Never use steel wool on porcelain tile. Small particles of steel can become embedded in the tile or the grout, eventually leading to rust spots.
- Avoid hard or stiff bristled scrub brushes as these can scratch the tile and lead to a dull finish.
With the proper care, your porcelain tile will stay in great shape for years to come!
