How to Get Stains Out of Carpet

The internet has DIY answers for carpet cleaning dilemmas such as how to get blood stains out of carpet, but professional carpet cleaning is the most effective solution. Whether you need to know how to remove fake blood stains after a Halloween mishap or how to remove chocolate stains from carpet after a Thanksgiving disaster, the following can help with those issues and more.

Removing Blood Stains from Carpet

Using everyday items, there are many different ways to tackle the removal of blood stains from carpet. For instance, if the blood hasn’t yet dried, fill a spray bottle with cold water and spray the area repeatedly. Dab carefully using a cotton towel. To avoid spreading the stain, don’t rub—only blot the stain. Repeat the steps until the wet blood has been removed. As needed, use a wet vac to dry the area. Otherwise, allow the area to air dry.

For dried blood stains, concoct a thin paste using salt and cold water. Apply the mixture to the stain and allow it to sit for about 5 minutes. Then blot the stain until it has been removed.

An alternative for removing dried blood stains, among many, is to blot the stain after applying a mixture of dish soap and cold water. Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 2 cups of cold water.

How to Remove Fake Blood Stains from Carpet

Be careful with fake blood because the stains it can create are more difficult to remove than real blood. Completely removing fake blood stains can be very difficult, especially if it contains FD&C Red #40, which has a permanent nature. If you act quickly after fake blood has been spilled onto the carpet, you will get better results.

  • Blot the area with a cloth or white paper towel to soak up excess liquid. If the fake blood is in powder form, use a spoon and dry to scoop up as much as you can (and then vacuum).
  • Saturate the stain with a grease and oil fighting solution.
  • Gently agitate the stain using a white sponge. Work from the stain’s edge inward toward the center to avoid making the stain larger.
  • Blot with a paper towel and press deeply into the stain.
  • Spray on water to rinse and blot again.
  • Allow the area to dry.
  • Repeat the process as needed.

Removing Chocolate Stains from Carpet

Set-in chocolate stains can be difficult to remove, but it’s not impossible. Pour cold water directly onto the chocolate stain on the carpet. With a small amount of dishwashing detergent on a clean cloth, use a circular motion to rub the stain. Let the stain sit for a few minutes, and then rinse the area with cold water.
