The Best Way To Clean Grout

Wire brush cleaning dirty grout, the best way to clean groutIn previous posts we have examined the best way to clean various types of tiles, from porcelain to slate. Today we will look at the best way to clean grout, the mortar that fills the crevices between the tiles. Grout is the mixture of sand, cement and water which locks the tiles in place while keeping water out. Grout fills the voids between tiles and makes the structure of the floor, wall or counter-top stronger by bonding the tiles together and protecting the edges from chipping or cracking. It gives the tiles a finished look and comes in a variety of colors to match any decor.

Grout is a porous substance and prone to staining, especially when the grout is a light color. Since tile is often used in kitchens, food and beverage stains are common culprits for discoloration. In bathrooms soap, mold and mildew can make it difficult to keep the grout looking new. Fortunately one way to clean grout yourself is with a little elbow grease and some common household products. As with other cleaning projects, it is best to use the mildest cleaning solutions first before escalating your efforts with harsher methods. Test your method in a small, inconspicuous area. Here are some general tips for the grout in your home.

The Best Way To Clean Grout:

  • Is it any surprise we turn to our old standby, vinegar? The mildest option is a 50-50 mixture of vinegar and warm water. Fill a spray bottle with the mixture and spray onto the grout. Let it sit for a few minutes and then scrub with a stiff brush.
  • If that method doesn’t work, make a paste of baking soda and water and smooth over the grout lines. Spray with vinegar solution and let foam for a minute. Then scrub with a brush and rinse with warm water.
  • For stubborn stains, a paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda can be applied to the grout. Brush in a circular motion to clean the grout and rinse with warm water.

It is important to avoid harsh cleansers, like chlorine bleach products which can erode grout. This can lead to larger problems and ruin the structural integrity of the tile. Use the products sparingly if at all.
